Heinz-Willi Wittschier

Heinz-Willi Wittschier (born May 5, 1942 in Cologne ) is a professor emeritus for Romance studies in Hamburg.

After graduating from high school in Kreuzgasse , Wittschier studied Romance studies and Middle Latin philology in Genoa and Cologne, where he also received his doctorate in 1967 with Fritz Schalk and Karl Langosch . His habilitation took place in 1972 in Hamburg with Wido Hempel and Hans Bottle . From 1967 to 2007 he taught Romance studies in Hamburg; He also held visiting professorships in Saarbrücken and Salzburg.

Wittschier is married and has two children.

Wittschier is best known for his book publications (about a dozen), with which he stimulates a larger period of French, Italian, Spanish or Portuguese-language literature. He attaches great importance to an international recording of the respective research situation, so that the bibliographical documentation of his (for German-speaking Romance studies) extremely comprehensive monograph corpus is particularly thorough and precise. Wittschier sees Romance studies - deviating from 'separatist' tendencies in this subject - as an indivisible total area of ​​the intellectual and aesthetic culture of the nations we know, the so-called Romania , to which he recognizes great importance for the understanding and cohesion of a united Europe. With this supranational concept of Romance literature, he sees himself as the philological successor to Karl Vossler (1872–1949). Since 2000, a main interest has been in Italian studies : his book series Basics of Italian Studies, published by Peter Lang Verlag , gives scholars a chance to publish who have developed a strikingly broad, fundamental and international spectrum on a particular author or topic of Italian literature. In the meantime, the work of Dante Alighieri (1265–1321) has become a focus of work in Italian literary studies . Wittschier's intention is to scientifically record the entire works of Italy's greatest poet and early European in a series of manuals based on the latest findings and thus make them generally accessible. Two compact volumes have now appeared on the subject, so that he is now also considered an outstanding representative of Dantistics . At the end of the 1970s, Wittschier founded the Photo Archive of Romanic Authors in Hamburg, which collects portraits of contemporary writers from all countries with the Romance language (including Hispanic America and Brazil). A sound archive is attached to this facility, which documents events (readings) with Romance authors.
