The Geirþjófsfjörður fjord , a side fjord of Arnarfjörður , is located in the West Fjords of Iceland . It belongs to a group of fjords called Suðurfirðir ( South Fjords ).

Characteristics

It is a narrow fjord with steep slopes on both sides and little underland. This can only be found very far in the fjord towards the Dynjandisheiði plateau , where it is largely covered by birch groves. Later forest plantings, etc. a. of conifers, can be found here. Therefore, part of the area around the fjord is protected.

The Botnsá river crosses this lowland and flows into the fjord.

Saga location

Here is a no longer managed farm of historical importance called Langabotn . It was the first farm established by colonists from Norway during the conquest of the Suðurfirðir.

Another court there called Auðarbæ played an important role in one of the Icelandic sagas , namely that of Gísli Súrsson . According to the saga, his wife lived here while he was in exile and Gísli was killed here near Einhamar .

Transport links

The part of the path that leads from Breiðafjörður to Arnarfjörður over the Gláma plateau , Dynjandisvegur, touches a rockfall from which you can see very well into the fjord, which is about 500 m below you.

The fjord, on the banks of which there are now only summer houses, can only be reached by boat. The three farms that once existed here have long since been abandoned, the last of them in 1969. This fjord cannot be reached by road.
