Geir Ivarsøy (born June 27, 1957 - March 9, 2006 ) was a Norwegian software developer .

Ivarsøy worked in the early 1990s with Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner and Håkon Wium Lie in a research group at the Norwegian state telephone company (now Telenor ) on a web browser . After the project was discontinued, Ivarsøy and von Tetzchner founded the company " Opera Software " in 1995 , which in December 1996 released version 2.10 of the first version of the Opera web browser .

Ivarsøy remained on the company's board of directors together with von Tetzchner until January 2004, but was also active in the company thereafter.

Geir Ivarsøy died in March 2006 from cancer.
