Geissler is an impact crater on the eastern edge of the front of the moon . The bowl-shaped crater lies within the Gilbert crater plain , west of the Mare Smythii .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1976 after the German physicist Heinrich Geißler . Previously, the crater as was Gilbert D respectively.
