Gilbert is an impact crater on the eastern edge of the lunar front side , east of Mare Smythii , north of La Pérouse crater and northwest of Kästner . The crater is heavily eroded, the crater rim is partially covered by smaller craters.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1964 after the American geologist Grove Karl Gilbert and the English doctor William Gilbert .
