Terrain model at Huangyangtan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The terrain model at Huangyangtan is a 630,000 m² (i.e. 63  ha ) miniature landscape west of the village of Huangyangtan ( Chinese  黄羊 滩 , Pinyin Huángyángtān ) and about 35 km southwest of the city of Yinchuan in the Ningxia autonomous region of the People's Republic of China . It was discovered in the summer of 2006 by a German user of the Google Earth program and is considered the largest relief model in the world.

Shown on an area of about 900 m by 700 m on a scale of 1: 500 is a 450 km by 350 km section of Ladakh , a union territory of India in the Karakoram , and of Aksai Chin , an area that is under Chinese administration.

The model is believed to be used by the People's Liberation Army for military training purposes. In 1962 the Indo-Chinese border war took place in the depicted region . According to the Indian military, potential conflict zones are normal and common scenarios for military training, and the fact that the Chinese military is training there is by no means indicative of future military conflicts, especially since the region is calm and peaceful.
