The Yellowtail Preußenfisch ( Dascyllus flavicaudus ) is a kind from the family of damselfish (Pomacentridae). The fish live in the southeastern Pacific from the Society Islands over the Tuamotu Archipelago to Rapa Iti and the Pitcairn Islands . There it replaces the closely related but not found Net Prussian fish ( Dascyllus reticulatus ).

features

Yellow-tailed Prussian fish are nine to twelve centimeters long. Their height is very high with a ratio of 1 / 1.4-1.6 (height / length). With the exception of the yellowish to yellowish-white tail and the light rear section of the dorsal fin, their body is dark, blackish-brown to blackish-purple. If the fish are not too black, the dark edges of the scales result in a net drawing. Yellowtail Prussian fish have 17 to 20 scales along the lateral line organ . The number of gill trap processes is 26 to 29.

Way of life

The fish live in corals and rock reefs at depths of 3 to 40 meters. Yellowtail Prussian fish feed on copepods , other small planktonic crustaceans, and algae. Like all damselfish, the fish are substrate spawners and stick their spawn to the wall in a cave or hidden niche. The male guards the spawn.
