features

The beetles are 16 to 25 millimeters long. They are colored black to black-blue, the underside is blue, blue-violet or blue-green. The base of the smooth pronotum is completely rimmed, and there is a punctiform dent on each side. The deck wings each have seven longitudinal rows with weakly recognizable points. They are also slightly hairy.

Occurrence

The animals are found in Europe and Asia , north to Lapland . They were introduced into Canada . You can find them from the plain up to 2,000 meters above sea level, especially in forests .

Way of life

The adults fly just above the ground with a distinct humming sound. They are able to make chirping noises with their back hips. In spring, after mating, the male and female dig an approximately 40 centimeter long tunnel with several side tunnels that end in chambers. A fecal pill is inserted into this and an egg is placed in a cavity at the rear end. Then the side corridor is filled with excrement and finally closed with clay. After about a year, the larvae are fully grown and pupate.
