The common bogus beetle ( Anaspis frontalis ), also known as the red- headed bogus beetle , is a beetle from the family of the silk beetles (Scraptiidae).

features

The beetles are 2.5–4.4 mm in size. They have an elongated oval body. They are mostly black in color, especially in the western area of ​​distribution. The front head, the basal antennae and the front legs are colored yellow-red. The spurs of the middle and hind legs are colored yellow-red. Special features of the species are the strong appendages of the 3rd sternite , which are short and hook-shaped at the tip, and the anterior tarsi , which are greatly broadened. In the eastern and south-eastern distribution area, the beetles are lighter in color, sometimes monochrome yellow-red, only with a blackening of the back of the head.

The beetle species is widespread in Central and Northern Europe and is common locally. Its distribution area extends in the north in Fennoscandinavia beyond the Arctic Circle . The species is also represented in the British Isles and common in England. In the south, the occurrence extends to the Iberian Peninsula , in the east to the Far East of Asia ( China , Japan ). Anaspis frontalis is the most common species of the genus Anaspis in Central Europe , with 35 species there.

Way of life

The adults appear in spring. They are particularly observed in the months of April to June. The beetles are often found on the flowers of blackberries and the common hawthorn ( Crataegus monogyna ).
