The Gemeinnützige Wohnungsbaugesellschaft mbH Wuppertal (GWG) was founded as a housing company in 1937 by Wilhelm Vorwerk in Wuppertal . Their task was the construction and management of workers' apartments. Shortly after its beginnings, it was one of the largest in the Rhine / Ruhr economic area .

GWG currently holds 21% of the shares, 75% the city of Wuppertal and 4% the Stadtsparkasse Wuppertal . The managing director is Oliver Zier, his predecessors were Harald Röllecke, Johannes Hiesgen and Helmut Sperling. The chairman of the supervisory board is Johannes Slawig .

Today, the business fields extend to the rental and management of apartments and commercial space, the construction and sale of property measures, the technical support of construction projects and project management. The GWG offers advice and support to senior citizens and students in their residential areas and cooperates with a large number of social associations such as the Wuppertaler Tafel or the Wuppertal Art and Museum Association . In 2009, the company had around 6,200 apartments and 72 commercial units. With 107 employees, sales of 38.1 million euros were achieved.

In addition to a number of different memberships in Wuppertal associations, the company is also a member of the General Association of German Housing Companies , the European Education Center for the Housing and Real Estate Industry , the German Association for Housing, Urban Development and Spatial Planning and the non-profit association for Housing, Urban Planning and Spatial Planning , the Federal Association for residential property and urban development , the German development aid for social housing and settlement as well as the Federal Association for Economic Development and Foreign Trade .

In 1998 the company hit the headlines nationwide due to the GWG scandal , in which various actors outside of this society were accused of embezzlement , fraud and corruption . Individual GWG projects had been sold at greatly inflated prices. Many of the accused were sentenced to prison terms and fines of varying lengths . The GWG received compensation payments amounting to several million euros.
