Gemma Frisius is an impact crater on the front of the moon , southwest of Mare Nectaris , north of the large crater Maurolycus and south of Pontanus . On the northern edge is the smaller Goodacre crater . The rim of the crater is heavily eroded and superimposed several times, the interior is largely flat.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the physician, mathematician, cartographer and instrument maker Gemma R. Frisius .
