Gempen Memorial

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gempen Memorial is one of the Automobile Club of Switzerland by guided mountain race for veteran vehicles from Dornach to Gempen in Switzerland. The event is reminiscent of the successful hill climbs of the 1920s.

history

The first event was held in 1911 as a "mountain test drive" ( regularity drive ). At that time, the authorities had not given permission for a real race. The “fastest” travel time from Oberdornach to Gempen among the very differently motorized vehicles was determined using a complex correction formula. Over 10,000 spectators later followed the real mountain races in the 1920s. However, since the organizer was overwhelmed by the large crowds, the races were stopped again.

In 1947 the Gempen race experienced its first revival , but for the time being it stayed with one event. In 2011, the Classic Group of the Swiss Automobile Club (section of both Basels) once again organized the first “mountain test drive” on the Gempen, punctually for the 100th anniversary of the first competition.

The 2nd Gempen Memorial took place on September 20, 2014.

On September 23, 2017 the 3rd Gempen Memorial started.

The 4th Gempen Memorial will take place on September 19, 2020.
