The Gemstelpass in the Allgäu Alps connects Mittelberg in the Kleinwalsertal with Hochkrumbach . The top of the pass is located at 1972 m below the Great Widderstein . The Widdersteinhütte is located directly on the pass .
A mule track has been running over the pass since the Middle Ages, which is now a hiking trail and part of the Walser Trail. It is believed that the Kleinwalsertal was settled over the pass from the 13th century.
The moderately difficult (according to SAC scale) crossing of the pass takes place from Mittelberg over the rear Gemstelalpe. The climb to the upper Gemstelalpe is exposed but secured. Surefootedness is required. The pass is also suitable for crossing by mountain bike.
