Gençlik Parkı (Turkish for youth park) is a city park in the middle of the Turkish capital Ankara . It is located in the Ulus district and covers 28 hectares.

history

After Ankara was designated as the capital of the new republic in 1923, it was to be given an urban green space and become a city with emphatic greenery in the middle of the Central Anatolian steppe. For this purpose, the area was reserved as a green area in the Jansen plan . This was previously mostly boggy.

The park's architect was Theo Leveau . Construction time was from 1936 to 1938, the opening took place on March 19, 1943, a Turkish national holiday called Youth Day . The park was supposed to receive the arriving comers of the former bus station and become an exhibit of the city. It also appeared on postcards and stamps. In addition to recreation, the area should primarily serve the education of young people. There were swimming, rowing and sailing lessons in the park.

After 1950 (parallel to the change of government by the Democrat Parti ) the area was expanded with an amusement park (1951), a park railway (1957) and the so-called Gazinos (locations for events with live music), whereby the park lost its green space and recreational function and elements of the Entertainment were emphasized. In the Gazinos - especially in Göl Gazino - famous Turkish musicians ( Neşet Ertaş , Zeki Müren ) held their concerts. The small, cascading section of the park was left undeveloped for recreation.

From 1970 the urban development interest died out and the park was neglected. Due to the increased internal migration into the city, the visitor structure shifted even more towards the entertainment market - which some sociologists describe as Arabesk culture.

In 2006–2009 the park was completely renovated. All buildings - with the exception of Göl Gazino - were demolished, the tea gardens closed and, among other things, food stalls built in their places.

construction

Centrally located is an artificial lake with a fountain , the fountains of which are integrated into an effect show in the evening, alternating with the respective music. At regular intervals, images are projected onto the fountains - including those of the current Prime Minister Erdoğan, to which the visitors respond with applause or boos.
