Gene Bates (born July 4, 1981 in Stirling ) is an Australian cyclist .
Gene Bates began his professional career in 2006 with the Italian Professional Continental Team L.PR. In 2003 he became Australian champion in the U23 class and later drove as a stagiaire at Crédit Agricole . He did not get a professional contract and drove again as a trainee a year later , this time with Saeco . At the Tour Down Under 2006 , he reached fifth place overall. Then he was strong once at the Tour de Langkawi 2006 second behind Laurent Mangel .
