The Utah Genealogical Society was founded in 1894 with the aim of assisting members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (" Mormons ") with family history information, mainly around their faithful vicarious baptism and other ceremonies for the deceased to enable non-Mormon ancestors. As a non-profit organization, the Genealogical Society makes its facilities and materials available to all genealogists, regardless of their denomination. The organization is headquartered in Salt Lake City .

history

The company was founded on November 13, 1894. The basis at that time were around 300 books on family history.

In 1938, it began in the United States (such. As with microfilming family history of relevant original documents church records , civil records , census records, court records), 1948 in Europe . The films are kept in a document vault near Salt Lake City in six air-conditioned tunnels under 200 meters of solid granite.

Existing microfilms and microfiches are also gradually being digitized. In addition, thousands of volunteers around the world are busy indexing the documents. The main content of the respective sources is recorded according to defined rules and stored in a database. This makes it easier for researchers to find people and related events and related documents via a database query.
