General Motors East Africa

General Motors East Africa Ltd. is an automobile and commercial vehicle manufacturer headquartered in Nairobi , Kenya .

history

The company was founded in 1975 as a joint venture between General Motors and the Kenyan government. The assembly of commercial vehicles began two years later in the company initially called General Motors Kenya Limited .

In 1992, General Motors (45%), C.Itoh (now Itochu Corporation, 4%) and the government (51%) were named as shareholders. The shareholders are currently GM Asia Pacific Holdings (57.7%), Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation (20%), Centum Investments (17.8%) and Itochu Corporation (4.5%).

Opel and Isuzu vehicles were assembled in 1992. Meanwhile (2016) commercial vehicles are from 3.5 to 15 tons. Around 22 vehicles are produced every day. In addition, GMEA imports complete Chevrolet vehicles .

By 2013, GMEA had assembled around 67,000 vehicles.

In early 2017 it was announced that General Motors had sold its GMEA stake in Isuzu.
