Generation R

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term Generation R stands for the “Generation Robotics”. It is the name of the first generation of “ Robotic Natives ”, a generation in the future who grew up with robotics in their everyday life. The basic idea of Generation R says that robotics and automation in the future will have a major impact on society, similar to the impact of the Internet and the digitization of the Generation Y and Generation Z .

definition

Generation R is the first generation that grew up with robotics in early childhood. Household robots , toy robots for children or autonomous vehicles are nothing special for this generation, but part of everyday life. They are considered the first generation of robotic natives, based on the concept of digital natives in the field of digitization. In the literature, Generation R follows Generation Z.

Generation R in science

For the first time, the terms "Generation R" and "Robotic Natives" were used in a scientific context as part of a presentation by Dominik Bösl at the " Gartner CIO Summit 2013" and as part of an ongoing doctoral project at the Technical University of Munich . The president of the European robotics association euRobotics aisbl, Bernd Liepert, spoke, among other things, at his plenary keynote at the IEEE IROS conference 2016 of a Generation R or of robotic natives.

Other meanings of the term

The term “Generation R” is also used in the context of the Shell Youth Study . Here, however, the "R" does not stand for robotics, but for "relaxed". The generation of those born between 2000 and 2015 is therefore characterized by relaxation. The approach goes back to the sociologist Klaus Hurrelmann , who assumes that young people are no longer under so much stress and therefore have more time to think about society and life. According to him, Generation R is characterized above all by the fact that it is politically interested, optimistic and patriotic. Since the study was published in 2015, however, attention to this use of the term has decreased significantly.

There is also a Generation R study. It is a prospective, population-based cohort study of a multiethnic urban population in Rotterdam , the Netherlands . The focus is on the health of pregnant women and children.
