Design process for generative design

Generative design refers to a design method in the various fields of design ( art , architecture , communication design , product design , ...). It is essential that the output - image, sound, architectural model, animation, ... - is generated by a set of rules or an algorithm (usually in the form of a computer program), which eliminates essential work steps such as constructive measurements beyond the design . The distinguishing element is usually the visualization of the technical optimization .

In contrast to terms such as generative art or computer art, which have long been established , generative design also includes tasks from design , architecture and engineering disciplines . The main areas of application in the field of communication design are the creation of information graphics , diagrams or flexible appearances . In architecture, generative design (also often called computational design) is mainly used for form finding and simulating architectural structures.

The increasing importance of generative design is mainly due to the fact that new development environments ( Processing , VVVV , Quarz Composer, OpenFrameworks, ...) or scripting options (Rhinoscripting, Scriptographer, ...) meanwhile make it comparatively easy for designers with little programming experience to come up with their ideas to implement this area.
