Gentium is a free Unicode - font made by Victor Gaultney is designed.

Gentium has approximately 1,500 glyphs depicting the variants of the Latin alphabet in use around the world, and also has Greek letters that match the Latin ones. The styles "regular", " italic ", "bold" and "bold-italic" currently exist . The addition of Cyrillic letters is in preparation.

Gentium is provided together with the alternative character set GentiumAlt , which has flatter diacritical marks than the standard version, in order to create a more harmonious appearance for letters with several diacritical marks.

history

In 2003 the font won the Type Design Competition along with fourteen other fonts. On November 28, 2005 it was made subject to the conditions of the free SIL Open Font License (OFL). Since April 4, 2008, versions of the Gentium Basic and the slightly less graceful Gentium Basic Book have been available in normal, italic, bold and bold italic styles. The addition "Basic" refers to the number of characters that only fully covers the Basic Latin and Latin 1 sections of the Unicode and also contains a few other characters (but this is sufficient for the Central European languages). In November 2010 an updated version of the normal and italic font of Gentium was published under the name "Gentium Plus". The "plus" version contains the full Latin character set, the IPA, and the Greek and Cyrillic alphabet. The bold and bold italic styles for Gentium Plus are in preparation. These styles are currently only available in the "Basic" and "Basic Book" families. The project plans to merge all currently available versions in the future in the "Gentium Plus" version, which will then also include the bold and bold italic style. The original Gentium will then be made available solely for reasons of compatibility.
