from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Geoffrey de Mandeville, 2nd Earl of Essex († September / October 1166) was an English nobleman, the second son of Geoffrey de Mandeville, 1st Earl of Essex and Rohese de Vere .

Life

During or shortly after the uprising of his father against King Stephen (1143/44), the young Geoffrey de Mandeville traveled to Devizes , the base of the Empress Matilda , whether of his own initiative or on behalf, is not known.

After the Earl's death in 1144, Matilda recognized Geoffreys rights to the County of Essex and the extensive Mandevilles' estates. His life in the last years of King Stephen is unknown. In January 1156, Henry II of England confirmed Geoffrey's title as Earl of Essex and his Mandeville estate, but not the estates and offices his father held during the Civil War.

The Earl served as the traveling royal judge with Richard de Lucy in 1165 and 1166, visiting many English counties. In 1166 he was preparing for Henry's campaign in Wales when he fell ill and died in September or October. Geoffrey's successor was his brother William de Mandeville, 3rd Earl of Essex .

family

Before 1155 Geoffrey married Eustachia Gouët, daughter of Guillaume Gouët III. and Mabile, an illegitimate daughter of King Henry I with Sibyl Corbet. When Eustachia complained that her husband was not living with her, the king helped her obtain an annulment of the marriage, which took place in 1158. As a result, the couple remained childless. Eustachia Gouët died before 1164.
