The genus Geomalacus is a genus of the family of slugs (Arionidae) from the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora). The few species are native to western and southern Europe.

features

The species of the genus Geomalacus are stretched out up to 7 cm long (rarely up to 9 cm). The small housing (up to 4 mm long, 3 mm wide) is firmly calcified and oval with a clearly visible core. It has a convex top and a concave bottom and is completely enclosed by the jacket. The coat takes up the front third of the body. The breathing hole is in front of the middle of the mantle on the right side. In the genital apparatus, the spermatic duct is slender, the epiphallus is very long and twisted. A sac-like structure (homologous to the spermathec) is with the penis / epiphallus transition through a short duct. The penial retractor starts with this duct. The atrium is extraordinarily long, the spermatophore thread-shaped and pentagonal or hexagonal in cross-section.

Geographical distribution, occurrence and way of life

The species of the genus Geomalacus are native to Western Europe (Ireland, Northern Spain and Northern Portugal). They live on lichen-covered rocks in open areas and in forests on moss- and lichen-covered trees. The animals feed on lichens, liverworts and mosses.

Systematics

Some authors divide the genus Geomalacus into two sub-genera. This subdivision is not used by other authors.
