The Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg-Schule (short: LG ) is the high school of the district of Kassel . In the 2017/18 school year, the Lichtenberg School was attended by around 1250 students.

history

The Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg-Schule in Kassel has existed under this name as an undergraduate high school in the Kassel district since 1993. It emerged from the former upper secondary school Kassel-Oberzwehren (OSGO), which was founded in 1973. The school was named after the mathematician and physicist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg .

Focus

Special focus / offers of the Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg-Schule are:

  • School with a focus on music
  • Talent Center for Mathematics (previously Lighthouse School of Mathematics)

Since the establishment of the upper level high school in Kassel-Oberzwehren in 1973, mathematics and science lessons have been one of the school's main focuses, which is reflected, among other things, in the high and stable dial-up numbers in mathematics and science courses. Very early in the school's history, another component of the school profile developed with the subject of computer science. In addition to conducting computer science basic and advanced courses as early as the 1970s to the present day, this led to an offer, in addition to the general higher education initially parallel to the upper time later in a 14th school year training as mathematical-technical assistants (MaTA) to complete. This course was offered for the last time in 2012, after which no further classes were offered due to lack of demand.

In particular, since the expansion to an undergraduate grammar school from grade 5 in 1993, the mathematical focus of the Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg-Schule has expanded with offers that go well beyond pure technical instruction. Saturday academies (lighthouse meeting for students in grades 5–7 as well as lighthouse academies, later MatheWerkstattMedien for older students), a weekly mathematical café to prepare for participation in mathematics competitions, the mathematics group (also for elementary school students) and a Early study offer in cooperation with the University of Kassel is part of the school's program. This mathematical focus was recognized by the Hessian Ministry of Education in 2006 with the award of the title "Lighthouse School Mathematics of Hesse". After the end of this state program in 2012, the Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg-Schule received the title “Center for Mathematics” in recognition of its activities as a lighthouse school from the Hessian Ministry of Culture.

The Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg-Schule is the only school in the city and district of Kassel that is a member of the national excellence school network of mathematical and scientific schools. Accordingly, talented and interested students have access to a wide range of events and support programs in universities and industry, and there are high-quality advanced training opportunities for the teachers of the Lichtenberg School.

  • Handball talent development center
  • Media school

From 2004 onwards, concepts for integrating digital media into teaching developed from the profile focus on computer science ( see Mathematics Talent Center ( previously lighthouse school in mathematics) ) in connection with the computer equipment available. For the development of such concepts, the Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg-Schule was included in the "TopTen" of the media schools of the State of Hesse as part of the Schule @ Zukunft media initiative. In the following years, investments by the school authorities and the use of third-party funds created the school framework, which led to the increased development of teaching units with the use of tablets and mobile computers. From 2013 this led to an EU- Comenius -Regio project “Paducation”, which, together with partners from Sweden and Kassel, dealt with the development of so-called “Mobile learning scenarios”. From 2016, as a continuation of this development, a class will use tablet computers for the first time as part of a so-called "1: 1 solution", which are permanently available to the students. For all other members of the school community there is a student-operated media lending facility, in which tablets, laptops, projectors and cameras are borrowed for school purposes and in which IT support is offered at the same time.
