The Georg-Forster-Gymnasium was founded in 1964 as the "Städtisches Gymnasium Kamp-Lintfort ". The renaming took place on June 22, 2012, among other things, the students presented the new abbreviations GFG in a choreography. The renaming is to honor Georg Forster , who also traveled and described the Lower Rhine during his lifetime. However, he never traveled to what is now the area of the town of Kamp-Lintfort, especially since the size and importance of the town was not given during Georg Forster's lifetime.
For the 2019/2020 class, around 750 pupils are attending the grammar school.

Certain basic courses such as French, Italian, Latin, philosophy or Russian can also be offered as a 3rd or 4th Abitur subject through the cooperation.
