Georg von Rauch House

The smoke house

The Georg-von-Rauch-Haus is the former nurses' home of the Bethanien Hospital, occupied in December 1971 , on the north-west side of Mariannenplatz in Berlin-Kreuzberg . The house was named by the occupiers after the Berlin urban guerrilla Georg von Rauch , who had died a few days earlier after an exchange of fire with the police. Since then, the Rauch-Haus has been used as a “self-managed living collective”. For several years it was recognized by the Berlin Senate as a contact point for homeless young people. The Rauchhaus still sees itself as a self-help project, especially for young people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds. In December 2011 the smoke house burned down after an arson attack was carried out. The house was made habitable again in 2012 and is to be renovated. The money for this is to be raised through charity parties.

Occupation and legalization

After a teach-in (with a concert by the rock group Ton Steine Scherben ) on December 8, 1971 at the Technical University on the death of Georg von Rauch, his participants set out to occupy Bethanien, which had been vacant since 1970 and which was also called for in leaflets. At 9:30 p.m. the police were alerted, whereupon they immediately put together a large contingent to break up the gathering of around 300 mostly young people on the adjacent Mariannenplatz by using baton and tear gas . This did not succeed immediately, and so the Berlin Senate began negotiations with the occupiers. In December 1971, the Rauchhauskollektiv - organized in the sponsoring association "Jugendzentrum Kreuzberg eV" - received a provisional usage contract for the building. Since January 1973 this user agreement has been changed and extended several times. The residents were mostly around 40 to 50 people between the ages of 11 and 35 who saw themselves as "left of the SPD".

Police measures

About four months later - on April 19, 1972 at 4.15 a.m. - a major raid was carried out in the Georg von Rauch House with 400 police officers. 28 people were provisionally arrested. With seized materials, including empty wine bottles, batteries, alarm clock and a defective water pipe, the police wanted to prove that explosives attacks were being planned there. Rio Reiser sang this police action in the Rauch-Haus song by the band Ton Steine Scherben . In 1974 and 1975 there were further police raids in the Rauch house. Some residents lodged complaints against the raid on March 5, 1975 after inventory had been destroyed.

Objectives of the occupiers

  • to care for one another and live together as equals
  • equal voting rights (e.g. at the weekly plenary)
  • Develop a sense of responsibility
  • do not live at the expense of others (e.g. roommates) or dependent on others (e.g. Senate)
  • Passing on socially critical political opinion to others (e.g. at work)
  • fight for your own interests (e.g. through demos, distribution of leaflets, street theater, etc.)

present

Around 40 people live in the Rauchhaus today. The main activities of the house project include the development of the house community, the renovation of the building and youth cultural events. The sponsoring association "Georg von Rauch-Haus Jugend- und Kulturzentrum Kreuzberg eV" wants to manage the Rauchhaus independently as a self-help project. At the beginning of December 2011, 40 years of Rauchhaus was celebrated. On December 25, 2011, there was a major fire in the early morning hours, in which, according to the fire brigade and police, everything pointed to arson as there were two parallel sources of fire. At the time of the fire, there were almost 150 people in the house. In addition to the residents of the house, numerous visitors to a party in the basement were guests.
