Georg Bürstmayr

Georg Bürstmayr (born April 20, 1963 in Vienna ) is an Austrian politician ( Die Grünen ) and lawyer . He has been a member of the National Council since January 9, 2020 .

Career

Bürstmayr graduated after attending the elementary school in Vienna and Maria Enzersdorf the school Baden , where he in 1981 graduated . He then studied at the Law Faculty of Vienna Law and graduated with the Diploma in 1990 from. After completing the court year in Vienna, Bürstmayr worked for a Viennese law firm until 1997 . Since 1997 he has been an independent lawyer specializing in aliens and asylum law, criminal law, constitutional and administrative law as well as the protection of human rights and fundamental rights. In addition to his work as a lawyer, Bürstmayr was the head of the Human Rights Advisory Council of the Federal Ministry of the Interior from 2000 to 2012 . In 2005 he was awarded the Bruno Kreisky Prize for services to human rights .

Political activity

On January 7th, 2020, after Alma Zadić left the National Council and took office as Minister of Justice in the Kurz II government, Bürstmayr took over her National Council mandate in the Green Party. Bürstmayr dedicated his first speech as a member of the National Council to the appreciation of the activities of the Austrian police and, at the same time, the demand for the independent authority listed in the government program to investigate police misconduct.
