Georg Ernst (publisher)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georg Ernst (born February 16, 1880 in Berlin ; † December 31, 1950 ibid) was a German publisher in the Ernst & Sohn publishing house for building technology.

He was the son of the publishing director of Wilhelm Ernst und Sohn (formerly Ernst & Kohn , founded by Wilhelm Ernst and Heinrich Korn in Berlin in 1851) Georg Eberhard Ernst (1852-1902), the son of the publisher's founder Wilhelm Ernst (1814-1894). His mother Erselia Salerni was a native Italian. After the death of his father in 1902, Georg Ernst took over the management of the publishing house in coordination with his brothers. This also included a printer and the Gropius bookstore. Georg Ernst put the publishing house in a leading position by working with the pioneer of reinforced concrete Friedrich von Emperger at the beginning of the 20th century to develop this material, which revolutionized construction technology. In 1904 the magazine Beton und Eisen (later Beton- und Stahlbetonbau ), founded by Emperger in Vienna in 1901, was taken over, in 1905 the concrete calendar (also created on Emperger's initiative) and in 1908 the manual for reinforced concrete construction appeared. From 1910 the booklet of the German Committee for Reinforced Concrete (at that time still reinforced concrete) was added. In 1923 the first edition of the construction technology appeared and in 1928 of Stahlbau (as a supplement to construction technology and from 1952 independently).

In 1925 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from TH Danzig .
