Georg Komnenos (Trebizond)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georg Komnenos (* around 1255 , † after 1284 ) was Emperor and Grand Comnene of Trebizond from 1266 to 1280 .

Life

Georg was a son of Emperor Manuel I of Trebizond from his third marriage to the Trapezuntian noblewoman Irena Syrikaina .

In 1266 he succeeded his half-brother Andronikos II on the throne. When he went with his army on one of his campaigns against the Turkmens in the mountains of the Taurus in 1280 , he was betrayed by his own nobles. In the event of a sudden attack by the enemy on Georg's troops, they did not fight, but instead turned to flee and left Georg, who was left defeated, to the Turkmens, who led him into captivity. His younger brother Johannes II immediately took advantage of George's absence to depose him as emperor and install himself as his successor.

Georg was released from captivity by the Turkmens in 1284. Since the Turkmens knew that Georg could still count on a following among dissatisfied aristocrats in Trebizond, they hoped that this step would lead to unrest in Trebizond due to the anticipated battle between George and John II for the imperial throne, and thus the Trapezuntian state would weaken. Georg's attempt to regain the throne failed, however, and the army he had recruited from his supporters was crushed. Although Georg initially succeeded in escaping being captured again by fleeing to the mountains, after a while he was caught there and taken. Nothing is known from his further life.
