Georg Lakon (born April 23, 1882 in Athens , † January 7, 1959 in Stuttgart ) was a German botanist and seed researcher .

Live and act

Georg Lakon, son of a mathematics professor, studied natural sciences at the University of Athens and received his doctorate there in 1904. After several years of assistant work at botanical university institutes in Germany, he took over the management of the State Institute for Seed Testing at the Agricultural University of Hohenheim in 1913 . He worked here until his retirement in 1950. After completing his habilitation at the Technical University of Stuttgart in 1919 with a thesis on insecticidal fungi, he held lectures on general botany there until 1924 - most recently as an associate professor.

As a lecturer at the Hohenheim Agricultural University, Lakon represented the entire field of seed science and seed testing . His research focus was the germination physiology of the seeds. He developed a biochemical method to determine the germination and viability of seeds. As the "topographic tetrazolium method", this test method was considered a standard method in seed testing for decades. From 1949 until his death, Lakon was editor for the scientific articles of the magazine "Saatgut-Wirtschaft".
