Georg Matthess , correct: Mattheß (born February 28, 1932 in Darmstadt ; † November 19, 2017 there ) was a German hydrogeologist . He was a professor at the University of Kiel and director of the Geological-Paleontological Institute.

Matthess received his doctorate in Darmstadt in 1957 and completed his habilitation in Frankfurt am Main in 1970. He was at the Hessian State Office for Soil Research (from 1966 as senior government geologist, from 1970 as government director) and from mid-1972 headed the applied geology and hydrogeology department. In 1973 he became a full professor and director of the Geological-Paleontological Institute in Kiel. In 1997 he retired.

He wrote several standard works on hydrogeology and dealt in particular with the influence of geological factors on the purity of groundwater.

In 1990 he received the Hans Stille Medal . From 1979 to 1987 he was President of the International Commission of Water Quality. In 1984 he became an honorary member of the Association of Hydrologists of India. He was an external member of the Polish Academy of Learning (PAU) in Krakow . In 1998, Matthess became Dr. hc from the University of Gent .

Since 1953 he was a member of the Darmstädter Wingolf student union , since 1978 also of the Kiel Wingolf.
