Georg Neuhofer (born December 10, 1660 in Augsburg ; buried February 2, 1735 there ) was an early German entrepreneur . With the calico printing technology he brought with him from England and Holland, he founded a company that was later continued by his son.

Life

Neuhofer, a trained gold beater , traveled through England and Holland in 1688 and 1689, where he and his brother Jeremias learned the technique of calico printing , which he later brought to Augsburg. In 1693 Neuhofer bought three houses in what is now Augsburg-Lechviertel , where the workshop was probably set up. Neuhofer tried to get an imperial privilege for the printing technology that he had successfully spied on. This failed in the Augsburg council, but the number of printers in the city was limited to 16. Jeremias Neuhofer left the city a little later in 1701, heavily in debt, while Georg Neuhofer continued to successfully expand his printing business. He bought more property and put on a new bleach. After his death in 1735, his son Georg Abraham Neuhofer (* February 28, 1697; † 1773) continued the business and increased the number of employees to over 100 by 1739. By 1767 he managed to increase the company's turnover from 36,000 to 217,600 guilders to increase. Between 1775 and 1779, under the direction of Georg Christian Neuhofer, 10,000 calico was already printed annually. In 1788 the printing house became the property of Franz Xaver Debler .
