Georg "Schorsch" Schmitz (* 1950 in Geilenkirchen ) has been the mayor of the city of Geilenkirchen in the Heinsberg district in North Rhine-Westphalia since 2015

After graduating from secondary school, he earned his first money as a disc jockey . When the discotheque burned down, Schmitz went into business for himself with a stand-up café and later with a record shop and video library . Since 1978 Schmitz also worked as a freelance reporter and journalist for the Rur-Wurm Nachrichten and for the Geilenkirchener Zeitung (until March 1996 Geilenkirchener Volkszeitung), the regional edition of the Aachener Zeitung . After his business went bankrupt , he emigrated to Thailand in 1990 and opened a beach bar there. In 1994 he returned to his hometown, married and started working as a reporter and journalist again. Schmitz has been divorced since 2010.

In the runoff election on September 27, 2015, he prevailed against Ronnie Goertz ( CDU ) as a non-party candidate with 55.1% of the votes cast . On October 22nd, 2015 he was sworn in as the ninth mayor of Geilenkirchen in the post-war period.
