Georg Stötzel (born June 2, 1936 in Dortmund ) is a German German philologist and professor emeritus at the University of Düsseldorf .

Live and act

Georg Stötzel studied German, English and psychology in Marburg , Bonn and at the University of Aberdeen . He received his doctorate in Marburg in 1963 with a work on dialect geography on time designations. In 1968 he completed his habilitation on reflexive verbs in German. In the same year he was appointed to the chair for German Philology and Linguistics at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf.

One of his areas of research is the German language of the present. His publications focus on the history of language as a problem history of the present, Nazi crimes and public language sensitivity through to semantic struggles in public use of language. Together with the German scholar Thorsten Eitz, he realized the project of a dictionary of “coming to terms with the past ”, in which the authors trace a history of use of forty terms with Nazi connotations on seven hundred pages. The work reflects his research activities, which mostly revolve around the topic of linguistics as a problem history of the present, as well as the public use of language.
