Georg von Sievers

Georg Joachim Johann von Sievers (* 1774 in Kiel , † 1843 in Sevastopol ) was a leading Russian general during the French Russian campaign and the subsequent liberation wars 1813-1815.

Georg Joachim Johann von Sievers was one of the sons of the Holstein major Gottlieb Christian von Sievers (1737-1810). In 1765 his father found a position as a colonel in the Russian Empire and, from 1776, as governor of the Russian city of Tikhvin . After attending school in Kiel, he graduated from an artillery and engineering school in Russia from 1790.

Military career

In 1792 Georg von Sievers was hired as a second lieutenant in the Russian army. After a brisk career, he became artillery chief of the Moldavian Army and major general in 1806. Appointed lieutenant general in 1810, he took over the management of the artillery of the Second Russian Western Army (1811) and in the war year 1812 of the III. Russian Western Army. During the Wars of Liberation, von Sievers u. a. responsible for the Russian artillery at the battle of Großgörschen . In 1831 he took his leave.

Of his numerous grandchildren, Michael von Sievers (1834–1915) was a Russian general of the artillery and a member of the council of war. His great-grandson Thadeus von Sievers (1853–1915) was a Russian general in the First World War.
