Thadeus Ferdinand Ludwig von Sievers ( Russian Фадде́й Васи́льевич Си́верс , Faddei Wassiljewitsch Sievers and Siwers ; * October 18, 1853 ; † 1915 ) was a German-Baltic general of the Russian army .

Education and career

Thadeus von Sievers received his training at the Infantry Junk School in Warsaw (graduation 1872) and the Nikolai General Staff Academy in Saint Petersburg (graduation 1881).

He took part in the Russo-Ottoman War 1877-1878 . After completing his training, he initially served as a commander of various units, mainly in the Caucasus and Black Sea regions , and later also in Siberia . From 1900 to 1901 he took part in the " Chinese Campaign " to put down the Boxer Rebellion . In 1906 Sievers became chief of staff of the military district of Vilna . From 1908 Sievers commanded the XVI. Army Corps, from 1911 the X Army Corps. On December 6, 1912 Sievers was promoted to general of the infantry, the second highest rank in the Russian army.

General in World War I

During the First World War , the troops commanded by Sievers were able to achieve successes against the Austro-Hungarian army at Przemyśl (now Poland ) and Rawa-Ruska (now Ukraine ) . In September 1914 he was awarded the Georgskreuz 4th level and appointed commander of the 10th Army of the Northwest Front. Under Sievers' command, he succeeded in taking the East Prussian cities of Stallupönen (now Nesterow , Russia ) and Goldap (now Poland) in October 1914 .

There were no further major successes for the Russian army in East Prussia. In the winter battle in Masuria in February 1915, the 10th Army commanded by Sievers was largely destroyed. After the defeat, von Sievers was deposed as commander of the army, although he had been one of those who had warned in advance of the unfavorable strategic situation that had arisen. Sievers' successor as commanding officer was General Radkevich Infantry . On April 25, 1915 Sievers was released into retirement, fell into depression and shortly afterwards committed suicide .
