George Habib Antonius ( Arabic جورج حبيب أنطونيوس, Born October 19, 1891 in Deir el-Qamar , Ottoman Empire ; † May 21, 1941 in Jerusalem ) was a Lebanese writer. He is considered the first Arab historian of Arab nationalism.

Life

Antony's parents were Greek Orthodox Christians. He grew up in Egypt and worked in Palestine under the British Mandate . In 1938, while staying at the Shepherd Hotel , he wrote the book The Arab Awakening .

Antony saw the origin of Arab nationalism in the tenure of Mehmet Ali Pasha in Egypt. He argued that Arab nationalism is a Western product that came specifically from the Protestant missionaries from Britain and the United States . He assigned the American University of Beirut (originally the Syrian Protestant College) a central role in the development of Arab nationalism.

While George Antony is seen as the founder of Arab nationalist history, modern historians have many problems with Antony's works. Many of his conclusions have been rejected by revisionist historians. Anthony was a Palestinian delegate to the St. James Conference in London in February 1939.
