General Cosby

George Blake Cosby (born January 19, 1830 in Louisville , Kentucky , † June 29, 1909 in Oakland , California ) was a brigadier general in the Confederate Army during the Civil War .

Life

Cosby finished his training at the Military Academy in West Point , New York , in 1852 , as the seventeenth of his class and then served as a lieutenant in the Mounted Rifle Regiment (mounted riflemen) of the US Army . On March 3, 1855 he was transferred to the 2nd Cavalry Regiment and on May 1, 1856 promoted to first lieutenant. On May 9, 1860, he was promoted to captain . During his tenure, Cosby was stationed mainly in Texas .

When the civil war broke out, Cosby quit his service in the US Army and signed up with the provisional Confederate Army with the rank of captain, first taught war tactics of the cavalry and on February 15, 1862 became head of personnel under General Simon Bolivar Buckner . In the following years, after several promotions, he was promoted to brigadier general on January 20, 1863 and was given command of a brigade under General Earl Van Dorn .

After the war ended, he moved to California , where he held several public offices at the state and federal level, and in 1882 accepted a position as adjutant general under Governor George Stoneman .
