George Cadwalader

George Cadwalader (born May 16, 1806 in Philadelphia , † February 3, 1879 ibid) was an American general in the US Army in the Mexican-American War and Civil War .

Life

Family and the Mexican-American War

Cadwalader came from a respected family engaged in both American public life and the military. His great-grandfather, Thomas Cadwalader, was the founder of Trenton and the founder of the Library Company of Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Hospital. His grandfather, John Cadwalader, was a general under George Washington during the American Revolutionary War . He himself was the second child of Thomas Cadwalader and Mary Biddle, whose father Clement Biddle was also a general in the Revolutionary War and later a judge. His older brother, John Cadwalader, was a member of the US House of Representatives for the 5th Congressional District of Pennsylvania and a judge at the US District Court responsible for the eastern district of Pennsylvania .

The Battle of Chapultec (September 1847)

He spent his childhood in Philadelphia and studied after the school attendance law . After being admitted as a lawyer , he worked as a lawyer until 1846 and then took part in the Mexican-American War between 1846 and 1848 as a brigadier general of the volunteer troops . For his bravery and service in the battles of Molino del Rey and Chapultepec , he was awarded the brevet rank of major general .

About his experiences during the war he wrote the autobiographical book Services in the Mexican Campaign of 1847 (1848).

Civil War

After the end of the war, he resumed his legal practice in Philadelphia before being named Major General of the State Volunteer Forces by Andrew Gregg Curtin , Governor of Pennsylvania in 1861 . In May 1861, he was placed in command of Baltimore , which at the time was in an emerging revolt against the US government .

In June 1861 he was deputy to General Robert Patterson as commander of the Shenandoah Army of the Northern States and took part with this in the campaign against Winchester. On April 25, 1862 he was appointed major general of the volunteer troops and in December 1862 a member of a committee for the revision of the military laws and regulations of the USA.
