George Elliot, 1st Baronet

Sir George Elliot, 1st Baronet JP (born March 18, 1814 in Gateshead , † December 23, 1893 ) was a British colliery owner and entrepreneur in the field of electrical engineering .

Life

Sir George Elliot was the eldest son of miner Ralph Elliot and began working at Whitefield Pit , Penshaw , at the age of 9 . He later became a mine owner. In 1849, together with Richard A. Glass, he took over the wire rope factory Kuper & Co (in Greenwich, near London), as well as their contracts for the manufacture of undersea telegraph lines. The dealer Johann Baptiste Wilhelm Heimann from Ludgate Hill , probably an agent of Julius Albert , had received a patent for the manufacture of wire ropes and cables on March 8, 1841 and then, with his partner John George William Küper, the wire rope factory Heimann & Küper, Grand Surrey Canal Basin in Camberwell. In November 1846 the company had to file for bankruptcy.

Glass & Elliot or Glass, Elliot & Company , founded in 1854 , manufactured the first transatlantic cable. In 1864 they merged with the Gutta Percha Company to form the Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Company .

Elliot was a member of the House of Commons from 1868 to 1880 and from 1881 to 1885 for the constituency of Durham- North and from 1886 to 1892 for the constituency of Monmouth- Boroughs as a member of the Conservative Party . On May 15, 1874 he was given the hereditary title of Baronet , of Penshaw in the County Palatine of Durham and of Whitby in the North Riding of the County of York .
