George Ferdinand Becker

George Ferdinand Becker (born January 5, 1847 in New York , † April 20, 1919 in Washington, DC ) was an American geologist .

Life

He studied at Harvard University , graduated there with a BA in 1868 and continued his studies at the University of Heidelberg , where he received his PhD in 1869. phil. PhD . Until 1871 he was a student at the Bergakademie Berlin . In 1875 he became a lecturer in mining and metallurgy at California State University. In 1879 he became a member of the US Geological Survey in San Francisco and the following year special agent for mineral statistics. He did work on the determination of atomic weight . He examined several gold deposits such as in 1896 in South Africa. In 1898 he was a geologist in the Army in the Philippines and from 1899 chief chemist and geophysicist in the US Geological Survey. With Ebenezer Emmons he wrote statistics on metals.

In 1901 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences , in 1914 he was President of the Geological Society of America . Since 1907 he was an elected member of the American Philosophical Society .
