George Frost ( 1745 - June 28, 1821 in Ipswich ) was a British artist.

Life

George Frost came from Ousden or Barrow , was trained as a builder at his father's building yard and later worked as a post office clerk in Ipswich until he was around 70 years old. He had to take care of buying hay and straw, looking after the horses, using the carriages, etc. His wife Mary, b. Owen, helped with this activity.

As an artist he was self-taught . As a youth he had already done drawing and painting studies from nature; in addition, he had orientated himself on Thomas Gainsborough's landscape templates . His first documented watercolor is from the year 1780. While at first he mainly recorded the area around Ipswich in watercolors, he later also made pencil and charcoal sketches in places such as Felixstowe , Lowestoft , Southwold and Dunwich .

Frost cultivated a friendship with John Constable , with whom he made sketches around 1800 in the area of the Orwell River . He was also an avid art collector and in particular owned numerous works by Gainsborough. Frost died in his house on Common Quay at the age of 78 after several months of painful illness. He left behind his widow, to whom he had been married for 45 years.

His tombstone in St Matthew's Cemetery in Ipswich read:

IN MEMORY OF
GEORGE FROST,
WHO DIED JUNE 28, 1821,
AGED 77 YEARS.

The obituary for Frost, published in The Gentleman's Magazine with no name of the author, was written by his close friend Rev. James Ford, according to John Hayes. After the death of his widow on April 25, 1839, his art collection was auctioned by Robert Garrod on June 7th that same year.
