George Hay, the 1st Earl of Kinnoull

George Hay, 1st Earl of Kinnoull (* 1572 ; † 1634 ) was a Scottish nobleman .

He served as the Gentleman of the Bedchamber from 1596 and was knighted around 1609. In 1616 he was finally appointed Lord Clerk Register and Lord of Session , during which he supported the adoption of the famous Five Articles of Perth . George Hay was Lord Chancellor of Scotland from 1622 to 1634 . In addition, the titles Viscount Dupplin (1627) and Earl of Kinnoull (1633) were created for him. When the king wanted to tighten the service regulations of the Lords of Session (1626), Hay resisted and thus retained precedence over the Archbishop of St. Andrews . From 1632 to 1634 he was captain of the Yeomen of the Guard .
