The Lehstsee is a small natural lake in the natural area of the Neustrelitz Kleinseenland in the Uckermärkische Seen Nature Park in the Uckermark district ( Brandenburg ). It is located in the district of the core town of Lychen.

Geographical location and hydrography

The Lehstsee is about 2 km as the crow flies northeast of the city center of Lychen on the district of the core city of Lychen. The lake is approx. 450 m long and 190 m wide. According to the topographic map, the lake level is 1: 25000 (sheet 2746) 54.7 m above sea level. Due to the rise in the lake level by 20 cm, it should now be around 54.9 m. It has a tributary from the east and from a small pond north of the lake. The lake drains to the west via the Lehstseewflow ditch into the Oberpfuhlsee .

history

The lake was first mentioned in a document as early as 1299 ( stagnum Lest ). Along with 38 other lakes mentioned by name, it was part of the initial equipment of the Himmelpfort monastery , which the founder, Margrave Albrecht III. transferred to the monastery. The monastery was granted the sole right of use. The name is from an old Polish basic form * Lĕšč'-, relationship adjective to * Lĕska = hazel bush. The name is thus to be interpreted as Haselsee, or lake on which hazel bushes grow.

Use and renaturation

The lake belongs to the city of Lychen and is leased to Uckermark Fisch GmbH. From 1999 to 2006 the Feldberg-Uckermärkische Seenlandschaft Förderverein carried out a project to rewet the Lehstsee lowlands, an approx. 6 hectare flow moor east of the lake. The aim of the measure was to hold back the water and raise the groundwater level as well as initiate the formation of new peat. In 2006 the lake level of the Lehstsee itself was raised by around 20 cm by building a ramp. The volume of the lake increases by 20,000 m³ or 35%.
