George Alphonso Headley (born May 30, 1909 in Colon , Panama , † November 30, 1983 in Kingston , Jamaica ) was a West Indian cricketer . In 1934 he was named one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year .

Career

George Headley made his test debut for the West Indies team in January 1930 against England in Bridgetown, Barbados. He took part in a total of 22 encounters in test cricket for the West Indies team, scoring 2,190 runs (60.83 runs per wicket ). No other West Indian player has scored more runs per wicket. Globally, only the Australian Donald Bradman (99.94 runs per wicket) and the South African Graeme Pollock (60.97 runs per wicket) achieved more runs per wicket. Headley's last test was in January 1954 against England in Kingston, Jamaica.

family

The Hadley family were the first to appear in Test cricket for three generations . In addition to George Headley, who was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009, his son Ron and grandson Dean played test cricket. His son also played for the West Indian team and his grandson played for England.

His son Lynn was successful as a sprinter.
