George Hoyle (born April 20, 1896 in Rochdale , † 1977 ) was an English football player .

Career

The amateur player came to Rochdale AFC in February 1922 from local club Sudden Villa , which competed in the Rochdale Amateur Football League . For Rochdale he made his debut on February 25, 1922 in a 2-1 home win in the Football League Third Division North against AFC Ashington , where he contributed to the success with one goal. Three days later he also scored in a 2-1 defeat in the Manchester Senior Cup against Bolton Wanderers .

The club was in its first season in the Football League the entire season in search of an adequate center forward and so Hoyle was the seventh of nine players who was used in the center forward position. Ultimately, however, Hoyle was also unable to permanently solve the problems in the storm center. After he had remained goalless on the following two game days in two 0-1 defeats against AFC Barrow , with his Sudden Villa teammate Harry Foster also playing on right winger, he was no longer used for Rochdale, which the season on finished last in the table, and soon disappeared back into amateur football.
