Sir George Jessel

Sir George Jessel (born February 13, 1824 in London , † March 21, 1883 ibid) was an English lawyer. He was imperial archivist, judges, Crown Counsel (Solicitor General) from 1871 to 1873 and from 1873 to 1883 had the office of Master of the Rolls held.

Life

George Jessel was the son of Zadok Aaron Jessel. He attended a Jewish school in Kew near London. As a Jew, he could not study at Oxford or Cambridge , which only members of the Church of England accepted . For this reason he studied at Lincoln's Inn from 1842 .

In 1856 he married Amelia Moses, with whom he had three daughters and two sons.

From 1868 to 1873 Jessel was a member of the House of Commons for the Dover constituency . In 1872 he was beaten to Knight Bachelor ("Sir"). In 1880 he was elected to the Royal Society .
