George Ntafu

Andrew George Nga Ntafu (* 1942 on the island of Likoma , Nyassaland ; † October 20, 2015 in Blantyre , Malawi ) was a Malawian politician who was a minister several times.

Life

Ntafu, who on the small island in Lake Malawi lies Likoma Island was born, according to a study of medicine , the first doctor for neurosurgery his home country. After the election of the first President of the Republic of Malawi Hastings Kamuzu Banda after a thirty-year term in the first multi-party elections in Malawi's history on May 17, 1994, he was appointed Minister for Health and the Environment in 1994 by the new President Bakili Muluzi . After a cabinet reshuffle, he was Minister for Transport and Civil Aviation between 1995 and 1996.

On May 2, 1996, President Bakili Muluzi reshuffled his cabinet, as a result of which the Second Vice President Chakufwa Chihana and three other leading ministers lost their offices. The previous Secretary of State Edward Bwanali took over the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Development, while George Ntafu became the new Secretary of State. After just one year in office, however, he was replaced as Foreign Minister by Mapopa Chipeta in 1997 . In 1999 he returned to President Muluzi's cabinet, initially serving as Minister of Tourism, National Parks and Wildlife, and then from 2000 to the end of Muluzi's term in 2004 as Minister of Education, Science and Technology.

On October 20, 2015, Ntafu was killed in a road traffic accident.
