George Rivas
George Angel Rivas, Jr (born May 6, 1970 in El Paso , † February 29, 2012 in Huntsville , Texas ) was a member and leader of the infamous escape gang " Texas Seven ", which broke out of a maximum security prison in December 2000 and thus one of the the largest manhunt in US history. During their escape, they committed several robberies and shot and killed the police officer Aubrey Hawkins.
George Rivas was sentenced to death on August 29, 2001 for the murder of Aubrey Hawkins and was transferred to death row at the Polunsky Unit in Livingston, Texas.
He was in the February 29, 2012 Huntsville Unit , Texas executed . Werner Herzog interviewed George Rivas a few days before his execution and put Rivas at the center of an episode of the On Death Row series .
