Life

After volunteering in the navy, he served in the naval wars with Holland and in the Nine Years War against France, becoming captain in 1673 and rear admiral in 1690. He took part in the battles of Beachy Head (1690) and Barfleur / La Hougue (1692) and was defeated after the latter on February 20, 1693 to Knight Bachelor ("Sir"). In the naval battle of Lagos in 1693 he was defeated on the way to the Mediterranean Admiral Tourville . In 1700 he led the English squadron that enabled the Swedes to invade Zealand in Denmark.

In 1702 he led the failed expedition to Cádiz , but was able to intercept the Spanish treasure fleet on the way back near Vigo . Together with Sir Cloudesley Shovell and Prince Georg of Hesse-Darmstadt , he conquered the fortress of Gibraltar in 1704 and prevented the French relief by Toulouse and d'Estrées in the Battle of Vélez-Málaga . Here, however, his fleet suffered heavy losses. George Rooke resigned from the service in 1705.
