Anne Hilarion de Costentin, comte de Tourville, entered the Order of Malta at the age of 15 and fought against the barbarians . In 1689 he was appointed Vice Admiral of the Flotte du Levant (Mediterranean Fleet) and in 1690 commanded the squadron with Jean II. D'Estrées that supported Jacob II's enterprise in Ireland . As commander in chief of the French fleet set up in the Canal , he won the naval battle at Beachy Head near the Isle of Wight in July 1690 over the British-Dutch fleet consisting of 112 ships. In order to enable the intended landing of the Jacobites on the British coast, he had to attack the British-Dutch fleet of 88 ships under Admiral Russell with 44 ships in the Battle of Barfleur on May 29, 1692 near Cape La Hague but into the crossfire and had to withdraw.
